Bangladesh is a riverine (‘Nadimatrik’) country belonging to South Asia. Breaking down the word ‘Nadimatrik’ means Nadi Mata. Small, medium, and large rivers can be seen in Bangladesh. Rivers are the life of this country. Five of the largest rivers flowing in Bangladesh are Padma-Meghna-Jamuna, Karnaphuli, and Brahmaputra- but among them, Jamuna is the national river of Bangladesh. The rivers are spread like a net across the country. Cities and ports have been built on both sides of the river. Some rivers are small and some are big. Each river is recognized for its contribution to a particular region.
According to information from Wikipedia, about 700 rivers with branches flow through the country occupying an area of 22,155 km in Bangladesh. According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the number of rivers in Bangladesh in 2013 was 310. Currently, the number of rivers in Bangladesh is about 700. These rivers have tributaries and tributaries. The total length of the rivers of Bangladesh including the tributary branches is about 22,155 km.
A study revealed that in the last 50 years, about 22,000 kilometers of rivers have disappeared in our country. But the river is one of the most important transport systems of Bangladesh. Many rivers in the country do not have water in any other season of the year except the rainy season. And even if there is water in some places, it is very little – not enough to sustain the flow of the river. Again, the scene of the water drying up and the middle point of the river waking up in some places is also visible. Where there is a shortage of water all around.
Naturally silting occurs in rivers over time. It fills a large part of the river. Because many rivers are located in the foothills, they have to contain river sediments upstream. As a result, the spread and width of the river is further reduced. Navigability is also reduced to extremes. There was a time when there were regular tides in different parts of the river. Farmers of all classes including fish farmers greatly benefited from farming. There was no shortage of water. Everyone could use enough water for farming. But now the source of the river is drying up. River overflowing. Due to the non-availability of water in the river, people are not able to use water as before. The effect of tides is no longer seen in rivers.
Bangladesh’s rivers are its highways. Traveling by launch (large ferry), steamer, or even a smaller boat is a popular, affordable, and scenic way to explore the country. In some cases, it can even be the fastest option to reach your destination. Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your river journey:
Ticketing:
Purchase tickets beforehand at the main hub, Sadarghat Launch Terminal(based on destination).
You can also buy tickets directly on the launch if you arrive early enough.
Online booking is available through Shohoz, but most people prefer buying in person.
Accommodation Options:
VIP Cabins: The most expensive option, offering AC, private bathrooms, and sometimes even elevators and restaurants.
Standard Cabins: Provide basic amenities like beds and fans.
Deck Class: The most budget-friendly option, where you essentially sleep on the floor. Tickets are purchased on board.
Food & Drinks:
While vendors sell snacks and drinks on the launch, it’s safest to bring your own food and water.
Safety Tips:
Avoid peak travel times like Eid holidays when launches get overcrowded.
Life jackets are uncommon, so consider your swimming ability if you have concerns.
If traveling solo, consider booking a cabin for extra security

Ratargul Swamp Forest:
Ratargul is the main ‘freshwater swamp woods’ in our country. The separation from Sylhet to this nation’s just-perceived swamp timberland is around 20 kilometers. The area of this water timberland is Khadimnagar Association of Sadar Upazila of Sylhet region and Fatehpur Association of lining Upazila Gowainghat.
The Goain Waterway, which streams down from Meghalaya in the north, has a gigantic howl in the south. In the ‘Jalaban’ Ratargul. As per Wikipedia, there are just 22 freshwater wetlands on the planet. There are two Indian subcontinents, one in Sri Lanka and the other in our Ratargul.
Amazon is the one in particular that can measure up to this lovely woods. Albeit known as the Tropical jungle, the Amazon is the biggest freshwater swamp timberland on the planet. This freshwater timberland is our Ratargul very much like the Amazon swamp.
In the neighborhood language of Sylhet, murta or patigacha is known as ‘Ratagacha’. The name of this timberland is Ratargul after the name of that symbol or Ratagachera. Like the Amazon, the vast majority of the vegetation stays submerged for four to seven months every year. The waters of Meghalaya in India stream into the Goain Waterway, and a restricted feeder of the Chengi Trench floods the whole Ratargul wetland. There is quite often water in the timberland during the storm season (May/September). In winter, it works out, and like ten backwoods, it is a dry land with fallen leaves. Also, the little channels become trails. And afterward, the oceanic fauna is protected in the enormous lakes dug by the woodland division.
The condition of this water is extremely peculiar in the blustery season. Up to the midriff of a tree is lowered in water. Those that are somewhat more modest, are half lowered in water once more. Anglers are getting fishing nets someplace. The entire timberland is by all accounts dull due to the thick vegetation. Once in a while the tree stalks will hinder the way. They must be taken out manually. Be that as it may, in the blustery season, you must be exceptionally cautious in this timberland. Since Ratargul is the field of snakes. In the blustery season, snakes have their spot on the trees.
As per the backwoods division, the region of this timberland is 3325.61 sections of land. Of these, 504 sections of land of backwoods were proclaimed an untamed life haven in 1983. There are around 25 types of water lenient plants in these tremendous backwoods. Even though it is a characteristic backwood, the woodland division has established different types of water open-minded trees including stick, kadam, hijal, and murta. In the Ratargul backwoods, there are numerous venomous types of snakes, including non-venomous guitar, Jalandhar, and Gokhra. At the point when water enters the woodland in the stormy season, these snakes fall on the trees.
